Biografia

Lillian Gish nasceu em 14 de outubro de 1893. Estreou aos 19 anos. Sabe o Nascimento de uma Nação (1915), de D. W. Griffth? Pois é, ela estava lá. Estava também em Intolerância (1916), do mesmo diretor. Também em O lírio Partido (1919), Inocente pecadora (1920), Orfãs da tempestade (1921).
Todos mudos. Filmes que fizeram história em qualquer almanaque de cinema ou site especializado no assunto.
Mas logo no finalzinho do cinema mudo, quando esse já tinha alcançado um grande status, sua carreira já estava indo para o limbo por uma única causa: sua imagem estava ficando fora de moda. A época era de vamps, com o público mais se deliciava. Lillian trazia a doce e terna mulher, que já não importava tanto.
A decadência começou de certa forma com A letra escarlate (1926), seu primeiro fracasso comercial. A atriz ainda continuou no teatro. Foi lá que se refugiou entre as décadas de 30 a 60, enquanto fazia algumas participações em filmes. Em 1947 fez “Um duelo ao Sol”, concorrendo ao Oscar de Melhor Atriz Coadjuvante. Em 1955 brilhou em O Mensageiro do Diabo.
Em 1955 ela já era uma velhinha nas telas. Já então se transformara em uma espécie de patrimônio cultural da 7ª Arte. Um Oscar Honorário foi recebido por Gish em 1971, por sua contribuição ao cinema.
O fato é que o melhor ainda estava por vir quando em 1987 fomos presenteados com a sua última performance. Ela não vinha sozinha. Estava ao lado de dois outros monstros do cinema: Bette Davis e Vincent Price:
É até hoje a atriz com a carreira mais longa de toda a história: 75 anos. Gente, 75 anos! Significa dizer que ela começou sua carreira aos 19 anos e só foi findá-la aos 94, cinco anos antes de morrer.

E lá se foram 119 filmes.
